Powder Surface Defects
Type Description Causes   Solution
INCLUDES

Foreign body, impurities in the paint in the form of lumps that have not melted, visible after the paint is heated.

contaminated surface,
heated impurities from the furnace,
contamination from the conveyor and transport chain, dirty paint, insufficient cleaning.

Paint sifting, thorough
cleaning the oven, conveyor and the area around the spray booth, checking the cleanliness of the surface of the painted element.

MATT EFFECT

After heating, the elements are matte and have a milky shade.

Mixing paints of different compositions
Chemical, furnace gases, surface preparation

Paint change and care
cleaning the gun and paint lines after changing the paint, checking the surface preparation parameters,

preventing the accumulation of gases in the furnace.

FISH EYES

Round or oval depressions in the paint, often with a depth to the very surface, so-called. fish eyes.

Painting with paint with too high humidity, insufficient surface preparation, wet surface, oil, wax or silicone residues, residues from the surface preparation process.

Drying the surface, checking the dehumidifiers (if any irregularities are found, the dehumidifier should be replaced or repaired), eliminate the influence of external conditions.

NO REPEATABILITY OF COLOR The difference in the color of painted elements.

Elements annealed in various
temperatures or at different times, different coating thickness.

Unification of heating times, temperature (by measuring the temperature distribution in the furnace) and coating thickness (according to data sheet
technical support), cleaning the hardware for the application.

YELLOWING

Applies to white paints. varnished
elements are more yellow than the reference.

Too high annealing temperature or too long annealing time, difference in the thickness of the pattern coating and the painted element.

Setting the parameters of the furnace (temperature, time) in accordance with the technical data sheet. Preventing the conveyor from stopping (applies to tunnel kilns) adjusting the thickness of the coating to that recommended in the technical data sheet.

GLOSS DIFFERENCES

The varnished elements have a different degree of gloss than the reference panel.

Incorrect heating process - painted elements were underheated or overheated.

Setting the correct coating heating parameters (in accordance with the technical data sheet)

ORANGE PEEL

A rough surface that looks like an orange peel.

Incorrect film thickness, incorrect gun parameters, reduction in oven heating rate, defective paint.

If the heating rate of the furnace is too low, it should be increased, the thickness of the coating should be adjusted to that recommended in the technical data sheet, and the parameters of the gun and grounding should be checked.

NEEDLE STRENGTH

After painting, numerous, small depressions are visible on the surface of the elements (visible mainly when the coating is thick)

Too much coating thickness and/or wet powder, wet metal surface, surface pre-treatment residues.

Apply the thickness of the varnish layer in accordance with the technical data sheet, check the surface preparation process, use special paints with a degasser.

MECHANICAL DAMAGE

Cracking of the paint coating under the influence of impact, cutting

Incorrect surface preparation, underheating of the element or too thick layer of varnish.

Coating with the thicknesses recommended in the technical data sheet, setting the recommended heating parameters, checking the surface preparation parameters.

POOR CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

Insufficient chemical resistance may manifest as tarnishing, higher sensitivity to scratches or a soft coating (as a reaction to reagents)

Insufficient annealing, use of inappropriate paints.

Adaptation of heating parameters to those recommended in the technical data sheet, use of paints resistant to chemicals.

REVERSE IONIZATION

Back ionization occurs on the heated coating as a kind of disturbance in the paint flow. This problem is mainly noticed on the edges of the painted elements, in the corners and they look like needles.

High voltage, high coating thickness, inappropriate distance between the gun and the workpiece.

Reduce the voltage on the gun if it is too high, adjust the coating thickness to that recommended in the technical data sheet, adjust the distance between the gun and the painted element.

THE FARADAY CAGE EFFECT

No penetration of paint particles into cavities or recessed areas of the painted substrate.

High voltage, wrong deflector and gun angle.

Change gun voltage, adjust gun distance and angle, use different deflector if needed

PAINT ADHERENCE

Powder spilling into the spray booth, lack of powder adhesion to the painted element during application. The defect manifests itself in the form of varying thicknesses of the coating and an irregular surface.

Insufficient grounding, powder coat hangers, gun adjustments not correct, too much recycled paint, using Tribo electrostatic paint, too many fine particles in the paint.

Check grounding, replace paint-covered hangers, adjust gun settings, reduce recyclable paint, use appropriate paints for this type of application in the Tribo application system.

CORROSION

The process of gradual destruction of a material as a result of processes occurring between the material and the surrounding environment, mainly by water, oxygen or chemical compounds.

Coating defects, i.e. craters, needles, too aggressive environment, insufficient corrosion protection, incorrect surface preparation, too low coating thickness, insufficient curing of the coating.

Appropriate surface preparation and corrosion protection, appropriate coating thickness according to the manufacturer's guidelines, proper coating hardening in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

POOR COVERAGE

Coverage is measured by the extent to which the paint covers the painted surface

Coating thickness too low, fluctuating coating thickness.

Apply the appropriate thickness of the coating in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

LEAKS

Sagging may occur during the curing process if the paint on the vertical parts of the metal is of low viscosity.

Coating thickness too high, heating up too fast, object and furnace temperature too high, powder viscosity too high during coating formation.

Optimize coating thickness and annealing conditions according to manufacturer's guidelines.

FRAME EFFECT

Paint buildup at edges and corners.

Too much powder cloud, small distance between the gun and the parts to be painted, too much distance between the parts.

Adjust the amount of paint dispensed from the gun, reduce the gaps between hanging, painted elements, adjust the distance of the gun from the painted elements.
